Organizing for worker rights
Promoting labor rights for immigrants has been a major focus of our work since the organization’s inception. We continue to help cheated and abused workers find resolutions to their claims, either through case referral or direct action with the employer. We have worked extensively with day-laborers in Northeast Philadelphia, and restaurant workers in Center City and South Philadelphia. In 2007, we organized a 12-week “Know-Your-Rights” workshop for workers. The course allowed participants to understand the legal framework that supports labor rights cases and also gave them tools to organize directly in their workplaces. We hope to expand this project and connect with other organizations to begin building a worker center in Philadelphia that will serve as a hub for workforce development, legal services, and labor organizing initiatives. In 2012 we will begin to build an immigrant-led labor rights committee.
